You know that feeling when you walk into a bakery and your nose just lights up? That immediate hit of warm butter, fresh bread, and something sweet in the oven the kind of smell that stops you in your tracks? That’s exactly what happened when we walked into Sweet Zen Bakery in Exton PA. Fiona’s exact words? “It smells fantastic.” And she was absolutely right.

With a beautiful modern industrial fit out, two massive front displays packed with goodies, and a small bread rack of fresh sourdough and focaccia behind them this place means business. And as Australians who have spent a lot of time searching for a bakery that actually tastes like home, Sweet Zen hit different.

We may have gone slightly overboard. We walked out with a brownie, a brookie, a pistachio shortbread, a blackberry crumble, a raspberry cheesecake, all three coffee cakes (yes, all three don’t judge us), a red pepper and garlic focaccia, a latte, and a mocha with house made syrup.

Look, we take our food reviews seriously. ๐Ÿ˜‚

We were stuck in a hotel with no way to cook a proper breakfast so we tore into the focaccia first and wow, what a decision. Airy dough, slightly chewy, perfectly crispy on the outside, topped with roasted red peppers, a touch of cheese, and garlic. Seriously one of the best focaccias we have had in the USA. The fact that Sweet Zen even has fresh focaccia is a win it’s not something you find easily over here.

Stop everything. This was the absolute star of the show and we are not exaggerating when we say this was one of the best coffee cakes we have ever eaten in our lives. A berry coffee cake with a perfectly doughy base, a beautiful berry filling that was sweet but not overpowering, and a buttery streusel topping that had absolutely no right being that good. We ate way too much of it. Zero regrets. If Sweet Zen never makes anything else, this coffee cake alone justifies the entire bakery. ๐Ÿ†

Now as Aussies with heavy British influence, we know shortbread. We love shortbread. Real shortbread is buttery, dry, and will absolutely collapse your mouth into a black hole of dryness without a big glass of milk. Was this that? No. But hear us out it was buttery, thick, flavourful, and had a slight doughy chew to it. The pistachios added a perfect little crunch without being overpowering, and it was half dipped in dark chocolate. Half dipped in dark chocolate. We’re calling it both versions of shortbread can coexist in this world and we will die on that hill. ๐Ÿ˜„

First bite lovely buttery topping and beautiful pastry crust. Second bite absolute sucker punch of blackberry and lemon straight to the face. ๐Ÿ˜‚ It’s tart, it’s bold, and it will absolutely wake you up. Don’t mistake tart for bad though this was a seriously fun eat. Our tip: warm it up and add a splash of cream the Aussie/British way. It cuts that initial punch down to a perfect zingy bite. Loved it.

We were told it was baked but they looked so good we had to try. Creamy, soft, with just the right amount of raspberry that you could taste it without it drowning out the cheesecake. This being a baked cheese cake blew us both away, it has the texture of a whipped cold set cheesecake, truly amazing. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Full disclosure this is Fiona’s wheelhouse, so she’s the authority here. The verdict? Not bad, not amazing. Nice dense texture, good little crust on top the way a brownie should have. Think Starbucks brownie it hits the spot but compared to everything else at Sweet Zen it’s the one item that doesn’t quite reach the same heights. Still worth grabbing though!

Roy had a latte great coffee, solid flavour. Fiona had the mocha with house made syrup and she was absolutely delighted. Bold, smooth, and an actual adult mocha not the Hershey powder and espresso situation that passes for mocha at a lot of cafes. If you know, you know. ๐Ÿ˜„ The house made syrups are a lovely touch and you can absolutely taste the difference.
